Mike Brey Won’t Retire After Notre Dame Basketball Tenure
While Mike Brey is stepping away from Notre Dame basketball after the season, he will not officially retire from college basketball. The veteran head coach told Jeff Goodman he still wants to coach in the future.
“[I’m] definitely not done coaching,” he said.
Brey and Notre Dame announced last month that the head coach would step away following his 23rd season with the Fighting Irish. Since 2000, Brey has led Notre Dame to 13 NCAA tournaments with a 482–274 record overall, which is enough to be the winningest coach in Fighting Irish history.
However, Brey and Notre Dame have only made the tournament once in the last five years, which resulted in a second-round loss last year.
“It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future,” Brey said in January.
At the time, though, Brey mentioned continuing to work with Notre Dame even if he wasn’t the head coach.
“I look forward to working with Jack in any role that can help the Notre Dame family,” he added.
That no longer appears to be the case, at least until Brey potentially gets a new head coaching job. He would instantly become one of the most experienced coaches available for any school looking to hire a head coach.
