Carson Beck Named Georgia’s Starting QB

Carson Beck will replace Stetson Bennett as Georgia’s starting quarterback when the reigning national champs take the field for the 2023 season, head coach Kirby Smart announced on Saturday.

Beck earned the job based on his play against the Bulldogs defense and his ability to gain the trust of his teammates, prompting Smart to believe he is the quality fit to begin a new chapter behind center in Athens.

“He’s [Carson] done the best job,” Smart said about Beck following the team’s second preseason scrimmage, per the Athens Banner-Herald “…He’s not a highs and lows, he’s not a real emotional guy. He’s not a real fiery guy. He’s very laid back. He understands his job. … He certainly commands the room. … He’s had a huge mass of reps, against a… really good defense, in ours.”

Beck threw for 310 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, while completing 74.3% of his passes in seven games last season as Bennett’s backup. In Georgia’s spring game, Beck completed 15-of-22 passes for 231 yards and one touchdown.

The fourth-year junior maintained the Bulldogs top spot at quarterback throughout the preseason, beating out Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton.

Georgia will begin its 2023 campaign on Sept. 2 against Tennessee-Martin.
