SI All-American Williams 'Clueless' on Recruitment Entering New Year

SI All-American athlete and Florida native Avantae Williams backed off of a longtime Oregon commitment this month. He will sign somewhere closer to home February 5.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Avantae Williams' won't play his college football too far from his native DeLand (Fla.). While the SI All-American is willing to leave the Sunshine State, he says the program he was committed to the longest -- Oregon -- is no longer an option.

"I just can't go across the country," he told SI All-American Monday. "I'm going to sign on February 5 but I'm clueless right now."

SEC and ACC programs had been jockeying for Williams' commitment despite his pledge to the Pac-12. Miami, where he was once verbally committed, could get him back on campus in January. Trips to Florida (January 24) and Ole Miss (January 31) are already set as official visits.

"I've got it down to Ole Miss, LSU, Miami, Florida and Georgia," he said. "I'm going to have to set some officials, and I don't believe I'll be able to take all of them.

"I will see more, watch some more film and see where I fit in at. Like what type of defense they play, where I fit in on the field like free safety or nickel or rover. Just trying to see what my role would be."

A program not yet on the visit schedule that should feel good should it push for the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Williams also happens to be the program poised for the best recruiting finish in the class of 2020

"Everybody is the same but I like Georgia right now," he said. "I like all of their DBs, I like their playing style, I think all of those boys are first round.

"They're some dogs."

Williams stopped short of naming UGA a leader in his recruitment, however.

"But I'm clueless..." he said.

The 2020 Under Armour All-America Game will take place Thursday, January 2 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The game, which will also feature seven prospect announcements, will be nationally televised by ESPN2 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Williams will suit up for Team Savage (white helmets) at safety.
