Surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark at the J-Bay Open surf competition in South Africa on Sunday, prompting event organizers to cancel the event

Surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark at the J-Bay Open surf competition in South Africa on Sunday, prompting event organizers to cancel the 12th and final day of the event.

The World Surf League, which sanctions the event, said in a statement it was “incredibly grateful that no one was seriously injured” and expressed gratitude to its Water Safety Team that pulled Fanning and surfer Justin Wilson to safety following the attack.

“Mick Fanning's composure and quick acting in the face of a terrifying situation was nothing short of heroic,” the WSL said.

The safety of our athletes is a priority &, after discussions with both Finalists, we will cancel the remainder of #JBayOpen competition.

The event was just underway when a large fin appeared near Fanning in the water, and Fanning frantically paddled in the opposite direction. The event was put on standby around 9:15 a.m. ET. It was canceled just before 11 a.m. ET.
