Darin Erstad responds to getting a single Hall of Fame vote

It's never a bad time for a compliment, but some times are more perplexing than others.

Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio were all elected to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday, each receiving over 450 votes. While their totals weren't surprising, the single vote cast for former outfielder Darin Erstad was a result unexpected by many.

Erstad, the current baseball coach at the University of Nebraska, was a two-time All-Star, won three Gold Gloves and was the league's hits leader in 2000, but was considered to be less than worthy of Hall of Fame honors.

He was just as surprised as others to hear that someone had cast a ballot with his name on it.

Erstad finished his 14-year career in 2009 with the Houston Astros, having also played for the Angels and Chicago White Sox.

Since he failed to earn 5 percent of the vote, Erstad will no longer be eligible for the Hall of Fame. He doesn't appear to be too upset about it, though.
