The Saga of Michael Sweetney

The second annual "Basketball Tournament"—a five-on-five basketball tournament in which fan-vote-determined teams to battle in a winner-take-all single-elimination tournament for $1 million—concludes this weekend. One of the players still competing is former Knick Michael Sweetney, who (as the above photo indicates) is up to 320 pounds but in a much better place mentally than during his career. Sweetney suffered through an undiagnosed bout with clinical depression during his career, prompted by his dad's death just before his rookie season, causing him to eat too much and not take care of his body. He had given up basketball but started seeing a psychiatrist six months ago and is getting back in shape with the hope of playing a couple years of pro basketball overseas. His team's game will air on ESPN Saturday at 2 p.m.

Hammon Time

The Sacramento Kings hired Nancy Lieberman as an assistant coach, joining Spurs assistant Becky Hammon as the only female assistant coaches in the NBA. Hammon had already set the bar pretty high by leading San Antonio to a summer league championship, but set it even higher Thursday with this impressive performance of the M.C. Hammer classic U Can't Touch This.
