Serena Williams introduces Beyonce at the VMAs

Before the US Open began, Serena Williams stopped by the Video Music Awards to introduce Beyonce.

MTV’s Video Music Awards have featured several prominent sports figures. First, Michael Phelps shouted out Future and revealed that he was listening to “Stick Talk” when he became a meme. Then, Iman Shumpert surprised everyone by appearing in Kanye West’s music video, which debuted during the show.

Well a bit later on, just before Beyonce stole the show with a long performance, Serena Williams walked out on stage at Madison Square Garden to introduce the pop star.

Williams, of course, was in the video for Beyonce’s song “Lemonade.”

With the US Open beginning this week, the move drew criticism from Canadian tennis player Genie Bouchard. The 22-year-old will begin play in the women’s draw on Tuesday. Williams is seeded No. 1 in the draw, while Bouchard is unranked.

She is currently in the middle of a lawsuit with the USTA after slipping and falling in the locker room during last year’s event, leaving her with a concussion.
