Good Riddance

Lions fans : AP

Cold Hard Football Facts is leading the parade of well-wishers congratulating Lions fans this week on the removal of Matt Millen from the team's front office. After enjoying a few moments with Kool & the Gang, dig in to all of the reasons CHFF has offered over the years as to why the Lions should have made this move years ago. At this point, Lions fans will just have console themselves with the notion "better late than never."

The Calm Before The Storm

The Yankees have accepted their playoff-less fate quietly thus far. That will change in the near future as it mulls a plethora of juicy free agents it might add: CC Sabathia, Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, Ben Sheets and more. Will GM Brian Cashman be able to keep Hank Steinbrenner from shelling out $20 million deals for each of these talents? Doe he even want to? And how will that alter not only the balance of power but the overall financial structure of the game? John Brattain at The Hardball Times considers all this and more, in addition to what commissioner Bud Selig might do to restrain the Yankees. It's likely to be a busy winter; time to get prepared.

The Secret To Winning Fantasy Hoops

Is finding players destined for career years before they have career years, writes Eric Wong at RotoEvil.com. Eight players fit the bill last season, which means they won't come cheap this season. But there's room for improvement from a few talents this fall, namely Corey Maggette and David Lee. Why? Well, you'll just have to read for yourself.

Thanks For Nothing, Plax

Though agent Drew Rosenhaus claims his client, Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, was busy dealing with a family emergency, the Giants still suspended their star receiver when he skipped out on Monday's workout. No matter the cause, Burress' two-week suspension will cost fantasy owners a game of Burress' work on Oct. 5 against the Seahawks. Coupled with the Giants bye this weekend, that's a potential killer for fantasy owners. Luckily, there are a few receivers emerging (Brandon Lloyd, Antonio Bryant) who can ease the hit.

Mr. Smith Comes To The Draft

Josh Smith: Bob Rosato/SI

We've never quote been comfortable knowing where to select Atlanta's Josh Smith in an NBA fantasy draft. On the one hand he is a blocks machine who can score and add a few steals. But he's often been an iffy shooter while offering little from the three-point line. That doesn't quite spell out first round. It does spell out late second round, argues Ron Chow of Dropping Dimes. If it means pairing Smith up with a LeBron James, we can't argue with that logic.

All Hat, No Cattle

That gnawing feeling in the recesses of your mind are growing louder each week, and we know why. It's because you have one of these six top-flight running backs who have yet to score a touchdown. Will the drought end for Ryan Grant owners anytime soon? It darn well better or I'm going to ... um ... it better, that's all we'll say. Bill Bender at Sporting News.com assesses the chances the likes of Grant and Steven Jackson break into the end zone this week.

Next Year Is Now For Most Of Us

Before we all close the book on the 2008 baseball campaign, it's a good idea to assess who played well enough down the stretch that they can help you next season. Fantasybaseball101.com has a sneak peek at four NL hurlers who will fly under the radar at many fantasy drafts next spring. If that isn't enough, the site also identifies five hitters in the NL and five hitters in the Junior Circuit.

The Game Is Still Won In The Trenches

Amid all of our talk of skill players to start or sit or waiver-wire players to target, it's easy to forget the game is won with line play. Corey Bertram of Rotowire remembers and analyzes which lines are under the most scrutiny in Week 4 for NFL.com. Suffice to say, it might be wise to stay away from the Steelers again this week.

Come One, Come All

At long last, SI.com has a fantasy football game, complete with all of the drafts, waiver wires, stats and analysis you need. Take the grand tour here and sign up a league. Heck, sign up two leagues if you want. We'll be waiting.
