Five Fantasy Takeaways From Episode 1 of ‘Hard Knocks’

For those expecting big things from the Aaron Rodgers-Garrett Wilson connection, the premiere of ‘Training Camp With the New York Jets’ didn’t disappoint.

The unofficial start of fantasy football season kicked off Tuesday night with the debut of this season's Hard Knocks on HBO. After all, what better way for fantasy managers to start scouting than from their sofas with the dulcet tones of Liev Schreiber weaving the narrative?

Last year, we fell in love with Dan Campbell and his Lions. Those who saw something special in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jamaal Williams got some of the best draft day bargains of the season.

This year it's Robert Saleh and his Jets. And yes, I am in love.

The first thing that struck me is how focused and respectful this young team seems. It starts at the top, with every coach wanting to develop not just football players but disciplined young men. The addition of Aaron Rodgers has already been a game-changer, and the team chemistry is palpable. Dare I say it -- Rodgers is even …. likable?

This morning, after reflecting on the first episode, here are my five fantasy takeaways:

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers

1. Aaron Rodgers is coming off the board as the QB14, which already looks like it could be a value.

Rodgers looks relaxed and entirely at home. Not only that, but the entire team has completely bought in on his leadership. Let's remember this man is only one season removed from back-to-back MVP awards, and he played most of last season with a broken thumb. He reunites with Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator, and he has plenty of eager and able weapons.

Oh, and by the way, I trust Rodgers will excel with Hackett more than I do Sean Peyton will fix Russell Wilson in Denver. I'm just saying...

2. Garrett Wilson's breakout season is confirmed.

I’ve already written about all the reasons I believe Wilson will break out this year, but now I am more convinced than ever. Wilson is a serious student of the game and has elite skills. There will be no need for a "Call of Duty" clause in his contract, a la Kyler Murray. Wilson is currently going as the WR11 -- one pick after last season's breakout wide receiver, St. Brown. Don't be afraid to take him at that ADP.

3. Sauce Gardner's arrow is still pointing up.

Not only did Gardner make good on his promise to his mother to graduate college, he is a leader on and off the field. Much like Wilson, he is also a serious student of the game. The friendship between these two rookies of the year (Wilson was OROY and Gardner was DROY) will improve each of them. They are going to grow by challenging each other. Take note, IDP players.

4. Don't give up on Zach Wilson yet.

Rodgers is taking a very active role in mentoring the young QB. That training gives Wilson an elite advantage that should not be underestimated. You probably saw that dime to Malik Taylor in the HOF Game. If there's more of that coming, you'll be glad you held on.

5. Randall Cobb is still Rodgers's boo bear.

The two were seen arm and arm as DeMarcus Ware sang the National Anthem. Cobb will go off for at least one big game this season: confirmed. Just be sure he does it on someone else's bench.
