GolfThreads: The Puma Golf 42 Collection Celebrates the Ryder Cup

Choose your side. Is it the red, white, and blue of the United States or the blue and gold of Europe?

Either way, Puma Golf’s new 42 Collection celebrates the spirit of the 42nd Ryder Cup Matches. Whether you find yourself watching the biannual competition from your couch, at a pub with friends, or in person at Le Golf National, Puma’s array of vibrant t-shirts, headwear, and footwear is the perfect way to show your support.

At the heart of the collection is Puma’s Suede G 42 golf shoe. The Puma Suede is one of the most iconic silhouettes in the sneaker game and has been worn for a variety of sports over the last five decades. It first appeared at the 1968 Olympic Games on the feet of gold medalist Tommie Smith. In the 1970s, the Suede made its way to the hardwood courts as Puma signed the silky smooth Walt “Clyde” Frazier to an endorsement contract. Frazier became the first professional basketball player to have a signature shoe when Puma created a wider version of the Suede and called it the Clyde. Earlier this year, Puma Golf celebrated the Suede’s 50th anniversary with a golf-specific version of the shoe complete with a waterproof, low-nap suede and an innovative hidden traction outsole.

“The Suede has been a street legend since day one. It’s clean, classic, comfortable, and now we’re excited to bring the same iconic look to the golf course. The Suede G will celebrate the retro design of the original version, but incorporate traction and function that’s vital to a spikeless golf shoe,” said Grant Knudson, Head of Footwear & Accessories, Puma Golf.

The brand has introduced special colorways inspired by the Ryder Cup. The cool Peacoat blue upper is paired with either a red, white and blue, or navy and gold outsole for Team USA and Team Europe respectively. Designers even worked hidden details into the shoe. Take a picture of the Team USA colorway with a flash and patriotic stars and stripes are revealed in Puma’s formstripe. Likewise, a circle of stars comes to life in the Team Europe colorway when photographed.

Joining the Suede G in Puma’s 42 Collection is the Team USA 42 IGNITE PWRADAPT Hi-Tops. Puma has been at the forefront of the golf hi-top trend and the IGNITE PWRADAPT is the brand’s most recent iteration. A reinforced mesh upper sits on top of Puma’s full length IGNITE Foam cushioning platform and 3-dimensional PWRADAPT traction technology. The high collar is created from the brand’s new EVOKNIT fabric, which hugs the ankle for added support and stability.

In addition to setting trends in golf footwear, Puma has also led the charge in bringing popular headwear styles from the streets to the course. A Puma collection just wouldn’t be complete without some stylish lids and designers answered the call with a pair of fashion-forward snapbacks for the 42 Collection. The Team USA Snapback features a navy blue body, a red bill, and “USA” and crossed clubs embroidered in white. The Team Europe version possesses a similar design with a white body, navy and white lettering outline, and a navy bill. Both pair nicely with the Suede G shoes on or off the course.

Rounding out the collection are two comfortable t-shirts constructed from a cotton/poly blend. The exclusive PUMA Team USA design is available in a patriotic red and blue on white colorway, while the Team Europe design comes in a white and gold on navy colorway. Both feature the same font and cross clubs as the hats, plus the Puma leaping cat logo on the left sleeve.

The Puma Golf 42 Collection is arriving now in golf shops on both sides of the Atlantic.
