DeChambeau grips for success

World's No. 5 collaborates on Jumbo putter grip

When Bryson DeChambeau began using JumboMax grips as a junior golfer, he was drawn to the fact that the grip, which is larger than a standard grip, provided more surface area for his hands to hold the club.

Now, as a 25-year-old professional with six international wins and ranked No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, DeChambeau continues to extoll the virtues of JumboMax grips, saying they are an integral to his success as the single-length irons for which he is known to play.

In 2018, DeChambeau worked with JumboMax to make the brand's first Jumbo putter grip, which DeChambeau used in winning the Omega Dubai Desert Classic last month.

“The oversized grip has been a big part of my success,” said DeChambeau, who plays with an X-Large grip, which has a 4.38-inch circumference. “The idea that I can have more area on the grip to hold the club makes it the number one reason I used it as an amateur and now as a professional.”

TAYLORMADE-PXG SHAKE HANDS
When TaylorMade Golf and Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) got in a legal tussle last year, consumers took little notice.

And when the two companies recently came to an agreement and reached a settlement, again the consumer was uninterested. But consumers should be glad to hear a deal occurred.

Legal costs from lawsuits can be an expensive proposition for companies, and what happens in the end is consumers sometimes pay for those costs through hiked equipment costs or the company will keep the same margins, but legal expenses will drain from innovation costs.

Also, the research and development focus could be constrained when it’s unclear if a company’s intellectual property is in doubt. Under the terms of the new TaylorMade-PXG agreement, each company will have specified rights to make club products under patent cross-licenses.

That will allow both TaylorMade and PXG to go back to what each does best, make good golf clubs.
