Ultra-Exclusive Pine Valley, Once Unwelcoming to Women, to Host 2034 Curtis Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The biennial Curtis Cup—a Ryder Cup-style team competition for women amateur golfers—is officially coming to Pine Valley in 2034. Known widely as one of the world’s greatest golf courses, the New Jersey club only allowed men as members until 2021.
Now, the top-ranked venue will host a historic event that consistently identifies future talent in the women’s game.
The 2034 Curtis Cup will not only be a momentous week for women’s golf, but for the golf community as a whole. The revered Pine Valley will be on public display for only the third time in its history. The George Arthur Crump design has hosted two previous USGA events: the 1936 and 1985 Walker Cup matches (the Curtis Cup’s male counterpart).
The momentous news was announced by Fred Perpall at the USGA’s press conference from Pebble Beach, site of the 78th U.S. Women’s Open.
“We'd like to offer a huge thank you to Jim Davis and to all the members at Pine Valley Golf Club for their support and for their vision to help us truly sort of showcase these amazing ladies. It's going to be a thrill to watch them play at Pine Valley," Perpall said.
“Always featured as one of the most iconic and venerable sites in all of golf, consistently ranked as one of the top places in all of the world to play golf, and it's just our pleasure and our honor to partner with them to actually put the ladies on this site."
In 2021, Pine Valley announced to its membership that women would be admitted for the first time since the club was established in 1913. As part of that decision, the course also relaxed all restrictions on women’s play. Previously, women were only allowed to tee it up on Sunday afternoons.
Annika Sorenstam—who is in the field at this week’s U.S Women’s Open—was one of the first three female members at the club, along with Sarah Ingram and Meghan Stasi, two decorated amateurs. Ingram captained the 2022 United States Curtis Cup team at Merion, and Stasi will captain the 2024 team at Sunningdale.
The Curtis Cup was first played in 1932. Top-ranked amateurs are selected to join Team USA and Great Britain & Ireland, and the two squads face off in a series of foursomes, fourball and singles matches. Team USA leads the overall series by a significant margin, 31-8-3.
