Golf News: 2020 Masters finalizes field at 96 players
Finalized: By Augusta (Ga.) National Golf Club, the field for the rescheduled Masters Tournament, according to a report Tuesday afternoon by GolfChannel.com’s Will Gray, who cited club officials. Four players were added from the Official World Golf Ranking, which was frozen March 20 after the coronavirus pandemic prompted PGA Tour officials to suspend the season. The move means that No. 44 Collin Morikawa, No. 45 Scottie Scheffler, No. 47 Christiaan Bezuidenhout and No. 49 Graeme McDowell will earn spots, rounding out the field at 96. Masters officials said that any winner of a PGA Tour event after the season restarts, or two finishers at the PGA Championship or U.S. Open who otherwise would have qualified, instead will earn spots for the 2021 Masters, not this year’s edition. McDowell, the Northern Irishman who won the European Tour’s Saudi International on Feb. 2, squeaked into the field when the rankings were updated after the ill-fated Players Championship. He moved from 51st to 49th in the rolling two-year rankings, meriting his first trip to Augusta National since 2016.
