PGA of America gives Steve Stricker more clout for Ryder Cup

Because of a season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. captain will get 6 at-large selections instead of the customary 4 for the matches in September at Whistling Straits

Revised: By the PGA of America, the selection criteria for the Ryder Cup. Because of the shortened season amid the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. captain Steve Stricker will get to make six at-large selections for his 12-man team, the PGA announced in a news release. That’s two more captain’s picks than usual. Points for the U.S. selection criteria will accrue through the scheduled Aug. 30 conclusion of the PGA Tour' s BMW Championship, the second of three events in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Stricker is expected to make his choices by Sept. 3, the PGA of America said. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 25-27 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis. The U.S. leads the Europeans in the biennial series, 26-14-2, but the Europeans have won nine of the past 12 matches, including last year’s 17½-10½ rout in France.
