PGA Tour journeyman Daniel Summerhays retires as touring pro to teach, coach in high school
Announced: By Daniel Summerhays, that he will retire from professional golf after this week’s Utah Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour, according to a report by Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City. Summerhays, 36, will teach and coach golf at Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, his alma mater. Summerhays played eight seasons on the PGA Tour but did not win a tournament. He won once on what was then known as the Nationwide Tour, in 2007, as an amateur during a college all-America career at Brigham Young. He intends to play his final event as a touring professional on the course where he won the 2000 Utah State Amateur, his first of two consecutive state amateur titles. Summerhays underwent surgery on both feet and ankles in February. “When I thought about how I’d want to make a difference and an impact, that was one of the ways I felt like I could touch a lot of kids and spread my influence a little bit,” Summerhays told the Deseret News’ Sorensen. “The last several years, it’s been in the back of my mind. Your kids [he and wife Emily have four, ages 5-12] get older and you love being around them and you start searching for ways to be home more and more. So, I’ve loved being home, especially through the coronavirus.” He is the brother of former touring professional Boyd Summerhays and the nephew of Bruce Summerhays, a three-time winner on the Champions Tour. Daniel Summerhays opened with a 2-under 69 at the Utah Championship, six strokes off the lead (scores).
