The PGA Tour heads west this week from the Travelers Championship in Connecticut to Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Detroit Golf Club, which dates to 1899, doesn’t lack for history. The club counted automaker Henry Ford as a member in the early 20th century and boasts an 80,000-square-foot clubhouse designed by Albert Kahn and featuring a distinctive red roof and copper trim. It’s from a time when members would drive out to the country club, stay the weekend, play some golf and venture back into the Motor City.

The Donald Ross-designed 36-hole facility, including the North Course, site of this week’s play, opened in 1916.

Last year, Nate Lashley won the PGA Tour’s inaugural tournament in Detroit with a 25-under score. Runner-up Doc Redman finished six shots behind.

This year’s field features three of the world’s top-10-ranked players as many of the game’s stars take a breather in Week 4 of the season restart from the coronavirus pandemic. No. 6-ranked Webb Simpson, who won the RBC Heritage two weeks ago before sitting out last week’s Travelers Championship because of concerns about potential exposure to coronavirus, has been cleared to play. He will be joined by No. 7 Patrick Reed and 10th-ranked Bryson DeChambeau. Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and up-and-coming Viktor Hovland also are entered.

This will be the fourth consecutive tournament without spectators. TV viewers will notice large red paneling around some greens, with the title sponsor’s name emblazoned the displays. Golf Channel and CBS will handle the broadcast.
