U.S. golf fans can prepare for evening feasts

Golf Channel and NBC will serve a Hawaiian-style Tournament of Champions to a prime-time audience in much of the country

Are you ready for some prime-time golf?

Most American viewers will be treated to live tournament action in the evening this week as the PGA Tour resumes its 2020-21 season with the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

With a five-hour time difference from the East Coast, Golf Channel will broadcast the tournament’s first three rounds at 6-10 p.m. EST Thursday through Saturday at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course on the northwest shore of Maui. The final round will be shown Sunday on NBC Sports at 4-6 p.m. EST before coverage switches to Golf Channel for the finish at 6-8 p.m. in the East.

The 42-man field, a record size for this formerly winners-only event, will include qualifiers from the Tour Championship because the PGA Tour lost 10 scheduled events to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

Tee times were expected to be released Tuesday.

Led by reigning Masters champion Dustin Johnson, who is No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, 14 of the top 20-ranked players in the world were scheduled to compete in the first of two consecutive events in Hawaii. Next week’s Sony Open in Honolulu will be the first full-field event of the year before the Tour heads to the mainland for the five-tournament West Coast Swing.
