USGA adds 13 players to U.S. Open field

Charley Hoffman, who grew up in San Diego, is among latest exemptions to land spots in June 17-20 Open at Torrey Pines

The USGA took another big step toward completing its field for next week’s 121st U.S. Open.

In addition to the 54 players who advanced out of final qualifying across the U.S. this week, the USGA added 13 exemptions for the July 17-20 Open at Torrey Pines’ South Course in San Diego.

Three players – Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, England’s Ian Poulter and American Charley Hoffman, who grew up in San Diego – qualified when they moved into the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking, which updated June 7. Ten players qualified via the points list of the U.S. Open 2021 European Tour Qualifying Series: Richard Bland (England), Guido Migliozzi (Italy), Marcus Armitage (England), Mikko Korhonen (Finland), Jordan Smith (England), Adrian Meronk (Poland), Edoardo Molinari (Italy), Dave Coupland (England), Thomas Detry (Belgium) and Matthew Southgate (England).

The 13 exemptions raise the number of fully exempt players to 89. A final spot in the 156-man field is being held open for any winner of multiple PGA Tour events that award full points for the Tour Championship.
