Jon Rahm Could Only Chuckle After Sinking Match-Saving Eagle on 18th Hole at Ryder Cup

On the 18th hole at Marco Simone, Nicolai Hojgaard muttered four key words to his four ball partner Jon Rahm.

“Do it for Seve,” Hojgaard said.

The Masters champion stepped into his 25-foot eagle putt with Seve Ballesteros at top of mind and produced a match-saving moment that perfectly emulated the Spanish legend.

With an aggressive speed, Rahm’s putt slammed into the back of the cup, popped up and dropped in, preventing Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka from securing the first full point for the Americans.

Rahm was holing chips from left and right all day—he even had a near ace in the morning session—but the eagle putt sent a shock wave through the European crowd.

Apparently Rahm was just as surprised at the result. All he could do was shut his eyes and smile when his ball disappeared into the hole.

“Those last two holes were a last ditch effort,” Rahm said. “Obviously Brooks was going to make birdie on 16, that was pretty much a gimme. I was trying to give Nicolai a look at it and ended up hitting the perfect chip. On 18, I have to give credit to Nicolai. Even though he didn’t have a gimme birdie and Brooks’s four-footer wasn’t a gimme, he told me to give it a run. He did give me a little nudge and said, ‘Do it just like Seve would.’”
