Jordan Spieth Just Tied His Own Record at the Masters with Wild Sunday Round

The Jordan Spieth experience is one the golf community knows well. There’s only one thing you can do to successfully prepare to watch Spieth contend in a golf tournament, let alone the Masters: buckle up.

On Sunday at Augusta National, Spieth started his final round at 1 under for the tournament, a full 10 shots behind the 54-hole leader, Brooks Koepka. He then proceeded to go on absolute tear—making back-to-back birdies on his opening holes—but in true Spieth fashion, there were bumps in the road.

Playing alongside Phil Mickelson, Spieth made sloppy bogeys on both of the front nine par 3s. He missed the fairway left by miles on the 18th hole, forcing him to punch out from the pine straw, beneath several towering pines. But among all the madness, the 2015 Masters champion tied his own Augusta National record.

Spieth made nine—yes, nine—birdies during his final round on Sunday to shoot a 6-under 66. The number ties his record for most birdies made in a competitive round at Augusta National. He first rattled off nine birdies in a single round at the 2018 Masters.

The round included three straight birdies on holes 8-10, and another three over his last five holes.

According to golf statistics expert Justin Ray, Spieth now has the most rounds at the Masters with eight or more birdies within the last 30 years.

Spieth has four rounds in that category, including today, and Tiger Woods has three. There are only five players with two such rounds.

The three-time major champion now has two final rounds at the Masters with nine birdies or more. There is only one player who has carded a round with nine birdies in the last 30 years: David Toms in 1998.

The Texan won't walk away with the green jacket—he finished 7 under while playing partner Mickelson finished at 8 under for the clubhouse lead at the time—but he sure is walking away with a final round at Augusta National that he’ll never forget.
