We have selected 12 individuals as nominees for Hawaii's High School Football Player of the Week.

High School On SI

The opening week of the Hawaii high school football season yielded a number of surprising results that grabbed our attention as the Aloha State took center stage on the national scene.

There were several upsets, notably Waipahu's 40-17 takedown of defending Open Division champion Campbell and Moanalua's 41-18 rout of defending Division I champion Kailua. Not to be outdone, Kahuku knocked off top-ranked St. Louis 20-12, taking over the No. 1 position in the High School on SI Elite 12 rankings released Monday.

Those were upsets were fueled by some notable individual performances that also stood out. We've combed through those results to highlight some of the top individual performers from those games, and we've listed them below.

Here are this week's nominations:

Blake Alo, Kahuku

The steady senior carried the ball 19 times on his way to 117 yards, consistently moving the chains while leading a Kahuku rushing attack that rolled up more than 200 yards. His efforts contributed to Kahuku's 20-12 takedown of then No. 1 St. Louis.

Loea Asuega-Stark, Kamehameha Kapalama

Asuega-Stark caught three passes for 90 yards in Kamehameha's 65-0 win over Farrington. He took one of those receptions 69 yards to the house.

Jayse Braun, Waipahu

Braun had a very productive night in Waipahu's shocking 40-17 win over Campbell with four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Jake Garcia, Waipahu

Garcia was the other half of Waipahu's electric pass-catch duo, completing 11-of-16 attempts for 163 yards with two touchdowns.

Aaron Johnson, Punahou

Johnson was the engine in an explosive Punahou offensive machine, scoring four touchdowns on the ground in the Buffanblu's 70-0 dismantling of Roosevelt.

Bodhi Kaanga, Kahuku

Kaanga proved to be quite the playmaker in week one with five catches for 85 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown reception.

Arona Liaina, Waipahu

Everywhere you looked Friday night, you could see Liaina as the two-way star ran for one touchdown, passed for another, and contributed at linebacker for a suffocating defense that registered three sacks and seven tackles for loss versus Campbell.

Tau Purcell, Kamehameha Kapalama

Purcell was one of the big defensive stars in week one, returning an interception 20 yards for a touchdown in Kamehameha's big win.

Maddox Sharrer, Kamehameha Kapalama

Sharrer piled up 79 yards rushing, scoring twice on runs of 33 yards and 1 yard.

Lucky Sugutaraga, Kahuku

Sugutaraga looked comfortable in his debut for the Red Raiders, completing 10-of-16 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. He proved to be a solid dual-threat, too, with seven carries for 39 yards and another score.

Luke Shigeta, St. Louis

With St. Louis trailing 20-0 before halftime at Kahuku, Shigeta was one of the main reasons the Crusaders were able to mount a comeback of sorts, connecting on 14-of-29 attempts for 128 yards. Like Sugutaraga, he made solid plays with his feet, too, hauling the ball 10 times for 41 yards with two rushing touchdowns.

Titan Te'o, Moanalua

Te'o lived up to his name with a titanic performance, including three rushing touchdowns in Moanalua's stunning 41-18 upset over Kailua.
