For one former Iowa high school football head coach, a decision he made that he felt was in the right has led to his dream being crushed.

Cole Mather resigned from the position as head football coach at Dyersville Beckman Catholic High School after leading the Blazers to a district title and earning the top coaching honor in the district last season.

Mather’s resignation came due to an ethics violation from messaging players that they were “like family,” along with taking two of them to a college football game with permission from the parents of those students.

“I had always wanted to be a head coach,” Mather told KCRG.com. “That was my dream when I was in high school. Trying to create our team and create our culture, that’s the only thing I think about all day.

But that all changed when he was cited for a possible violation of school rules. His case was taken before the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, as the two sides reached a settlement last month that reduced the initial charge

“When that first came out, I was just sitting there like, you’re going through some real mental health crises,” Mather said. “I mean you’re seeing your name just get crapped on essentially.”

Mather did note that the details becoming public after the first release helped to change the perspective of the incident. He also admits he was in the wrong and is hopeful to coach and teach again.

“Looking back, I understand,” he said. “I understand from a parent perspective how that would come across. I’m glad the board of education was able to investigate it.”

Dyersville Beckman Catholic is now led by Ryan Messiner, as he was named the new head coach this past March.
