Edina tops Rogers in OT in Minnesota high school boys hockey state tournament quarterfinal: Live score recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 5-seed Edina Hornets (20-7-2) defeated the The No. 4-seed Rogers Royals (24-3-2) 2-1 in overtime in the 2025 Minnesota (MSHSL) high school boys hockey Class 2A quarterfinals on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.
TheHornets and the Royals are two programs whose histories are the opposite of each other. Edina is the owner of 11 state titles, the most in Minnesota. For the Royals, the 2025 tournament was their first in program history.
But as the final buzzer went off to signal the end of regulation, the two teams were tied at one goal.
“[Rogers] seemed to be fine with the whole thing, being their first time here,” Edina coach Curt Giles said. “They didn’t show any nerves. I think they played extremely well.”
The Royals and Hornets battled to an even score through three periods thanks to goals from Rogers’ Mason Jenson and Edina’s Bode McConnell. Jenson and the Royals scored first. For ten minutes, the Royals were ahead of the Class 2A defending champions.
“It was probably one of the best games we played,” Rogers head coach David Brown said. “To get the lead was huge.”
Edina increased the pressure and controlled the remainder of the second period. McConnell tied it with a clean wrist shot past Rogers goalie Wyatt Knott.
“Our first period wasn’t our best period, but they hung in there,” Giles said. “They stayed with it. We started to play better in the second period and be more aggressive.”
The third period was another stalemate. The Hornets had their best chance with three seconds remaining. Edina's Tucker Johnson tipped a pass toward goal, but Knott made a sprawling save with his toes. Knott finished with 28 saves.
“Best game I’ve ever seen him play,” Jenson said. “Last save was the best save I’ve ever seen.”
As the game wore on, so did the players, and Edina’s Caleb Pittsley took advantage of a Rogers turnover at the blue line to score the game-winning goal for the Hornets.
“I just ripped it,” Pittsley said. “I wasn’t thinking—a little tired.”
For Rogers, it's a tough loss for a team packed with talented players. Many of them will play their last games for the Royals this weekend.
“It’s a special group that came together,” Brown said. “When you have a senior class that’s this special, you don’t want it to ever end.”
Edina advances to the Class 2A semifinal on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Excel Energy Center. The Hornets will play No. 1-seed Moorhead. The Spuds beat the Hornets twice already this season.
