ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Sea John's Spirit won the $58,000 Kings Canyon Purse by 2¼ lengths at Santa Anita on Thursday.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Sea John's Spirit ran six furlongs in 1:10.39 and paid $5.80, $3 and $2.40 as the 9-5 favorite in the field of six fillies and mares bred in California.

Queen of the Hill returned $3.60 and $2.80, while Pay the Debt was another 1¼ lengths back in third and paid $3.60 to show.

"This horse is named for a very good friend of mine that passed away who was a policeman," breeder and owner Pete Fer said. "His name was John, so I named her Sea John's Spirit. I love her a lot."

The victory, worth $34,800, increased Sea John's Spirit's career earnings to $109,540, with two wins in nine starts.
