Taghrooda wins English Oaks

EPSOM, England (AP) Taghrooda won the English Oaks fillies classic by 3 3/4 lengths ahead of Tarfasha to give owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum a one-two finish on Friday.

Jockey Paul Hanagan got his first classic win on the 5-1 Taghrooda.

Trainer John Gosden's filly was all the rage for the 1 1/2-mile (2,400-meter) race. Taghrooda traveled powerfully on the heels of the leaders before being sent on early in the straight and powering clear.

''It went like clockwork really,'' Hanagan said. ''You kind of plan for the race to go like that, I'd been planning it for the last month I think.''

The 4-1 favourite was Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Marvellous, who was never really a threat in sixth.

Volume was third with Richard Hughes dictating the pace. Luca Cumani's filly hung on to the bitter end and she was only a nose off finishing second.
