Fed Biz wins San Diego Handicap at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Fed Biz led all the way in winning the $200,000 San Diego Handicap by 5 1/4 lengths in track-record time for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert at Del Mar on Saturday.

Two horses were euthanized as the result of catastrophic injuries sustained in separate turf races.

Lil Swiss Echo hurt her right foreleg in the stretch of the fifth races, unseating apprentice jockey Drayden Van Dyke. He was taken to a hospital for an exam and later released.

In the ninth race, J Kat was pulled up on the far turn by jockey Corey Nakatani with severe injuries to his left foreleg.

In the San Diego, Martin Garcia, who lost his whip during the race, guided Fed Biz over 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.00. He paid $8, $5.40 and $4.40 as the 3-1 second choice in the field of 10 older horses.

The old track record of 1:41.48 was set by superstar mare Zenyatta in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes in 2008. Fed Biz improved to 3-0 at Del Mar. The 5-year-old horse had been idle since finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last November.

''I knew he was going to run really well. He had been training like a monster and he has always been that kind of horse,'' Baffert said. ''He really loves this track and gets over it pretty well. I was so happy to win the San Diego because it has always been a race that has eluded me here.''

Baffert earned his leading 106th stakes victory at Del Mar.

Footbridge returned $19 and $7.60 at 25-1 odds, while You Know I Know was another length back in third and paid $4.40 to show. Frac Daddy, the 2-1 favorite from the East Coast, finished fourth.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Fed Biz's career earnings to $660,496, with six wins in 16 starts.

In the co-feature $200,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for California-bred 3-year-old fillies, Go West Marie won by a half-length under Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux. She ran seven furlongs in 1:22.29 and paid $5.40, $3 and $2.80 for trainer Eddie Truman, who earned his first stakes win in 44 years at Del Mar.

Wonderful Lie returned $4 and $3, while Grazenette was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4.20 to show.
