American Pharoah wins $300,000 Del Mar Futurity

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) American Pharoah won the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds by 4 3/4 lengths on closing day at Del Mar on Wednesday, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record 12th victory in the Grade 1 race.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah ran seven furlongs on Polytrack in 1:21.48, the fastest Futurity since Declan's Moon was timed in 1:21.29 in 2004.

American Pharoah paid $8.40, $5.80 and $4 for his first career victory, He joined Go West Young Man in 1977 as the only previous non-winners to take the race.

Calculator returned $11.60 and $5.40 at 15-1 odds, while Iron Fist was another 8 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.80 to show. Skyway, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth in the field of nine.

American Pharoah, fifth Aug. 9 in his only other race, earned $180,000.

In the $103,390 C.E.R.F. Stakes for older fillies and mares, 3-5 favorite Reneesgotzip won by 5 1/4 lengths under Edwin Maldonado. She ran the fastest six furlongs of the summer meet in 1:08.51 and paid $3.20 to win.

Top Kisser was second and Go West Marie was third in the field of eight.

Reneesgotzip earned $56,400 for her eighth victory in 15 career races.

In the $100,000 Oak Tree Juvenile Turf for 2-year-olds, Daddy D.T. rallied to win by a half-length under Corey Nakatani. He ran a mile in 1:36.35 and paid $7.20 for his first victory in two starts, which was worth $60,000.

Sky Preacher was second and Papacoolpapacool was third in the field of nine.

In the $97,900 Pirate's Bounty Stakes for older horses, Ankeny Hill won by a half-length under Tyler Baze. He ran six furlongs in 1:09.41 and paid $14 to win. Ankeny Hill earned $55,500 for his fifth win in 13 career starts.

Ain't No Other was second and 1-2 favorite Seeking the Sherif was third.

Rafael Bejarano won his fourth career Del Mar riding title with 42 victories. Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and Peter Miller tied for the trainers' title with 20 wins.

Apprentice jockey Drayden Van Dyke rode three winners on the card.
