HANOVER, Pa. (AP) Two-time Pacer of the Year Captaintreacherous has been retired.

The 4-year-old won 23 of 33 races and $3.14 million in purses. His earnings rank No. 12 among all pacers.

Last season, Captaintreacherous won 13 of 16 races and $2.05 million on his way to his second Pacer of the Year honor. This season, he won two of seven starts and was scratched from the Canadian Pacing Derby in August.

Trainer Tony Alagna said Monday the horse ''hasn't been himself'' for several weeks and has been fighting a respiratory bug. He adds that retirement was the best course ''rather than take the chance of doing irreparable harm to this great horse.''

The horse will stand as a stallion at Hanover Shoe Farms in 2015. A retirement ceremony will be held Oct. 2 at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky.
