ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Hootenanny won the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf by three-quarters of a length, snapping trainer Wesley Ward's 0 for 16 skid.

The 2-year-old colt ran one mile on the turf in 1:34.79 at Santa Anita on Friday, the opening day of the 13-race world championships.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Hootenanny paid $14, $7.80 and $5.60. The Europe-based rider celebrated his 11th career Breeders' Cup win with his patented flying dismount in the winner's circle.

Ward finished 1-2, when his Luck of the Kitten was overtaken late in the race after setting the pace. Luck of the Kitten returned $9.20 and $7. Daddy D T was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $11 to show.

War Envoy, the 3-1 favorite, finished 12th in the 14-horse field.
