American Pharoah Triple Crown win prompted 48,000 tweets per minute

American Pharoah wins Triple Crown at Belmont Stakes

More than 240,000 tweets were sent in the 15 minutes following American Pharoah’s Triple Crown-clinching victory at the 147th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Twitter announced.

The win made American Pharoah the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years and the 12th in history. He led wire to wire, carrying jockey Victor Espinoza to victory after wins at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

American Pharoah was the 14th horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness since 1978, the year Affirmed won the Triple Crown. Among the 13 other horses, four finished second at the Belmont and four finished third.

Twitter said that at peak volume, at about 6:56 p.m. ET when the race concluded, 48,000 tweets were sent per minute.
