Soul Driver wins Oceanside Stakes on opening day at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Soul Driver won the $114,500 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds by a nose Thursday on opening day of Del Mar's summer meet.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Soul Driver ran a mile on turf in 1:35.86 and paid $7.80, $4.60 and $3 as the 5-2 second choice in the field of 11.

Forest Blue returned $8.20 and $5, and 12-1 shot Royal Albert Hall paid $5.40 to show.

Papacoolpapacool finished fifth as the 6-5 favorite of 40,304 fans.

The victory, worth $68,700, increased Soul Driver's career earnings to $203,350, with three wins in nine starts.
