Lady Shipman breaks Mellon turf mark for 5 1/2 furlongs
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) Lady Shipman broke the Mellon turf course record for 5 1/2 furlongs Sunday, winning the $100,000 Smart N Fancy in 1:00.46 at Saratoga Race Course.
A 3-year-old daughter of Midshipman, taking on older horses for just the second time, broke the mark of 1:00.59 set by Fiddlers Patriot in 2010.
Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. for trainer Kathleen O'Connell, Lady Shipman paid $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10 for her fourth straight victory and eighth in 10 career starts. Also the Coronation Cup winner Aug. 3 at Saratoga, she raised her career earnings to $338,800.
Free as a Bird was 2 3/4 lengths back and paid $2.50 and $2.10. Rumble Doll returned $3.40 to show.
