Songbird wins Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante by 5 1/2 lengths

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Songbird won the $301,250 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies by 5 1/2 lengths Saturday at Del Mar.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Songbird ran seven furlongs in 1:22.65 and paid $4.20, $2.60 and $2.20 as the even-money favorite in the field of 11.

Pretty N Cool returned $2.80 and $2.60 as the 2-1 second choice, while Land Over Sea was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $5 to show in the Grade 1 race.

Songbird, a daughter of 2002 Jim Dandy and Travers winner Medaglia d'Oro, won for the second time in two career starts for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The victory, worth $180,000, increased her career earnings to $222,000.

In the $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Turf for 2-year-olds, Hollywood Don outdueled Hot Ore to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Ridden by Brice Blanc, Hollywood Don ran a mile on turf in 1:35.46 and paid $10.60, $5.20 and $3.80 for trainer Peter Miller.

Hot Ore returned $8.60 and $5.40, while I'malreadythere was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $3.20 to show.

The victory, worth $60,000, increased Hollywood Don's career earnings to $102,250, with two wins in three starts.

Miller saddled another winner on the card, and he trails leader Hollendorfer, who has 20 victories, in the trainers' standings with two days remaining in the seaside track's summer meet. They tied for the title last year with 20 wins each.
