Shotgun Kowboy wins Oklahoma Derby

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Shotgun Kowboy held off Desert Dynamo by a half-length Sunday in the Grade 3 $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

Trained by C.R. Trout of Edmond, Shotgun Kowboy became the first Oklahoma-bred to win the Oklahoma Derby since Clever Trevor in 1989. Shotgun Kowboy has won five of seven career races, all at Remington.

Shotgun Kowboy ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.91 on the fast track to give jockey Cliff Berry his third victory in Oklahoma's richest thoroughbred race. The son of Kodiak Kowboy took the lead in the opening quarter-mile and held it all the way around. He started pulling away at the top of the stretch, but Desert Dynamo rallied to challenge.

Shotgun Kowboy paid $7.60, $4.40 and $3.20. Desert Dynamo returned $5.20 and $3.60, and Mobile Bay paid $3.20 to show.
