Annual Report, Stellar Path win stakes at Belmont
NEW YORK (AP) Annual Report and Stellar Path won $200,000 stakes Saturday at Belmont Park.
Annual Report overcame a tough trip to remain undefeated in two starts with a 7-1 upset in the Futurity for 2-year-olds.
The colt trained by Kiaran McLaughlin was squeezed back to last shortly after the start, He later rallied four wide to beat 8-5 favorite King Kranz by 1 1/2 lengths.
''It was not my intention to be that far back but it just got a little tight down the backstretch,'' winning jockey Joe Bravo said. ''He was really comfortable and going good. With three-eighths (of a mile) to go, he started getting to them. He really hit his stride.''
The time was 1:09.82 for six furlongs on the fast track.
Annual Report paid $16.80, $7 and $4.20. King Kranz returned $3.40 and $2.80, and Manhattan Dan paid $3.80 to show.
Stellar Path burst out of the pack in midstretch to win the Athenia for fillies and mares on the turf.
The gray 4-year-old trained by Christophe Clement and ridden by Joel Rosario improved to 7 for 18, beating 66-1 shot Weiner Valkyrie by three quarters of a length. Stellar Path paid $13 to win. The time was 1:43.41 for 1 1/16 miles on the firm course.
