Cadet Roni wins Wishing Well by 6¾ lengths at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Cadet Roni won the $75,000 Wishing Well Stakes by 6 3/4 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita after the race was taken off the turf course because of rain.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Cadet Roni ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.52 and paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.60 as the 6-5 favorite. The field was reduced to eight after five late scratches because of the change to a dirt surface listed as sloppy.
Kool Kat, the longest shot in the field at 18-1, returned $13 and $7. Bad Ju Ju was another length back in third and paid $8.40 to show.
The victory, worth $47,340, increased Cadet Roni's career earnings to $148,840, with four wins in 11 starts. It was the 4-year-old filly's first stakes victory.
Bejarano said: ''She broke really good and she was running confidently on the lead. I had so much horse, I didn't want to use too much, so we'll save it for next time.''
