Hawkedon rallies to win turf feature at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Hawkedon shot through an opening at the rail with a furlong to go and went on to win by 1 3/4 lengths in the $58,000 feature Friday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Hawkedon ran 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:13.19 and paid $5.40, $3.20 and $2.60.

St. Joe Bay returned $4.60 and $3.40, while Daddy D T was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4 to show.

The victory, worth $34,800, increased Hawkedon's career earnings to $144,470, with four wins in 16 starts. The 7-year-old gelding has three wins and two seconds from nine races on the track's turf course.

''`This horse loves this course,'' winning trainer Mike Puype said. ''He runs hard every time, tries hard every time.''
