NEW YORK (AP) Matterhorn pulled off a mild upset Friday in the $79,380 allowance feature at Aqueduct.
The fourth choice at 4-1 in the five-horse field, Matterhorn rallied from last to beat Stormin Monarcho by 2 1/4 lengths with Manny Franco in the saddle.
Matterhorn was overshadowed in the field by Transparent, the 8/5 favorite who ran fourth in his season debut, and Samraat, a prominent 2014 Triple Crown contender also returning from a lengthy layoff.
Transparent made his first start since finishing fifth last May in the Pimlico Special.
Two years ago, Samraat won the Withers and Gotham Stakes here before running second in the Wood Memorial. He went on to take fifth in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Belmont Stakes.
He has been hampered by a shin injury since then, running only once last year. Samraat was third Friday as the 2-1 second choice.
Matterhorn, in contrast, has been a steady campaigner. He had three wins in eight starts last season for trainer Todd Pletcher and finished fourth in his previous race this year.
Matterhorn paid $10.40, $3.90 and $3.70.
Stormin Monarcho returned $3.50 and $3.40 while Samraat paid $3.60 to show.
The time for the mile was 1:36.86 on the fast track.
