Kentucky Derby post positions: Horse and jockey information
On Wednesday, horses and jockeys learned their respective post position draws for the 2016 Kentucky Derby, which takes place on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Last year’s winner, American Pharoah, went on to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
After the draw, the favorite remains Nyquist with 10–3 odds. He drew Gate 13, the same position he started from before winning last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Since 1990, four horses have won from the No. 13 spot with the most recent being Smarty Jones in 2004.
A strong challenge is expected from Exaggerator and Mohaymen at 8–1 odds. A majority of the early money bet in Las Vegas was being placed on Mohaymen, according to William Hill’s United States sports book.
Trojan Nation drew what is considered the worst position with the No. 1 gate and has 50–1 odds of winning.
