Stays in Vegas wins Senorita Stakes by a head at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Stays in Vegas edged Be Mine by a head to win the $100,000 Senorita Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Stays in Vegas ran a mile on turf in 1:37.98 and paid $7.20, $3.20 and $3 as the 5-2 third choice in the Grade 3 race.

Be Mine returned $3.20 and $2.80 as the 8-5 favorite, while Sheeza Milky Way was another half-length back in third and paid $4.20 to show.

The victory, worth $60,000, increased Stays in Vegas' career earnings to $295,600, with five wins in seven starts for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The filly had been idle since Dec. 12.

''She's a very nice filly,'' Solis said. ''She keeps improving.''

In the $75,000 Desert Code Stakes, Mr. Opportunist won by 1 1/2 lengths under Santiago Gonzalez. Trained by John Sadler, Mr. Opportunist ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.30 and paid $4.80 to win. The race was shifted to the main track after heavy rain on Friday.
