HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) What would be the world's richest thoroughbred race is being planned for early next year at Gulfstream Park.
The inaugural edition of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup has been scheduled for Jan. 28, though no spots in the field has been publicly claimed. The Stronach Group announced the date on Wednesday, saying it was chosen to avoid conflicting with the Breeders' Cup or the Dubai World Cup.
There would be 12 entrants who pay $1 million each for a spot in the gate, and those entrants could then sell or lease the spots if they choose. Those entrants would also share equally in net income generated by the race.
The race is the vision of Stronach Group founder Frank Stronach. It'll be run at 1 1-8 miles on dirt.
