Scholar Athlete makes the grade in Belmont feature

NEW YORK (AP) Scholar Athlete set the pace Thursday to win the $80,000 allowance feature for 3-year-olds on the turf at Belmont Park.

The gelding trained by Graham Motion pulled an 8-1 upset, holding off the late-closing Ray's The Bar by 1 3/4 lengths.

Jose Ortiz was aboard for his third win of the day. The time was 1:41.08 for 1 1/16 miles on the firm course.

Scholar Athlete won for the second time in eight starts, paying $18.20, $6.80 and $4.20. Ray's The Bar, favored at 2-1 as part of an entry with last-place finisher Site Read, returned $3.80 and $2.70. Cave Johnson paid $6.40 to show.
