Second Summer wins Californian by a length at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Second Summer won the $200,000 Californian Stakes by a length Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Second Summer ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.29 and paid $20.80, $8.80 and $4.20 at 9-1 odds.

Hard Aces returned $5.40 and $2.60, while 4-5 favorite Lieutenant Colonel was another half-length back in third and paid $2.60 to show.

Gutierrez was back in Southern California a day after riding previously unbeaten Nyquist to a third-place finish in the Preakness, spoiling the Kentucky Derby-winning colt's chance to compete for the Triple Crown.

It was Second Summer's first-ever stakes win at Santa Anita for trainer Peter Eurton.

''When I saw him at the three-eighths pole, he just looked like he was loaded,'' Eurton said. ''It looked like he was going to get boxed in for a second and when Mario made the move to go in-between the two of them (Lieutenant Colonel and Point Piper) that was just such a great, money move.''

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Second Summer's career earnings to $270,610, with four wins in 13 starts. The 4-year-old gelding's sire is 2009 Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird.
