Weekend Hideaway, Bar of Gold win $200,000 stakes at Belmont

NEW YORK (AP) Weekend Hideaway and Bar of Gold won the $200,000 stakes at Belmont Park, the richest events Monday on Big Apple Showcase Day.

The 10 races on the card were restricted to New York breds. The program featured six stakes worth a combined $900,000.

Weekend Hideaway won a second straight state-bred stakes, a pacesetting 3 3/4 length victory over 4-5 favorite Royal Posse in the Commentator.

The 6-year-old trained by Phil Serpe followed his victory here last month in the Affirmed Success Stakes with his 10th win in 31 starts.

Luis Saez was aboard for the mile in 1:35.95 in the mud. Weekend Hideaway paid $9.80 to win.

Bar of Gold, the 3-2 favorite, scored a 1 1/2 length victory over Haveyougoneaway in the Critical Eye for fillies and mares.

The 4-year-old improved to 4 for 4 in New York bred races. She is winless in her other seven starts, all open stakes races.

Trained by John Kimmel and ridden by Junior Alvarado, Bar of Gold paid $5 to win.

The time was 1:36.83 for the mile.

In the other $125,000 stakes:

- Bust Another pulled a 19-1 upset in the Mike Lee for 3-year-olds. He paid $41.40 to win.

- Flatterywillgetyou stretched her winning streak to four in the Bouwerie for 3-year-old fillies. The winning payoff was $9.90.

- The big gray gelding Tapitation came rolling through the lane to take the Kingston on the turf. He also returned $9.90 to win.

- The Tea Cups took the Mount Vernon for fillies and mares on the turf. She paid $16 for the victory.
