ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist won't run in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic next Saturday at Santa Anita because of a ''puffy ankle.''

Trainer Doug O'Neill said Saturday that last year's 2-year-old champion came out of his workout Thursday with the ankle issue.

He says Nyquist jogs soundly and X-rays revealed nothing, but the issue occurred too close to next weekend's race.

The colt was scheduled to be retired after the Classic and go to stud in Kentucky.

Nyquist would have gone into the Classic on a three-race skid, having finished third in the Preakness, fourth in the Haskell and sixth in the Pennsylvania Derby. He won last year's BC Juvenile on his way to winning all five of his starts as a 2-year-old.

He won the San Vicente Stakes and Florida Derby this year before winning the Kentucky Derby for owners Paul and Zillah Reddam.
