Unique Bella romps in Grade 2 Santa Ynez at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Unique Bella won the $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by 7 1/2 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Mike Smith, Unique Bella ran 7 furlongs in 1:22.21 and paid $4, $2.60 and $2.10 as the even-money favorite.

It Tiz Well returned $5.80 and $2.60, while Shane's Girlfriend was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.10 to show.

Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer trains Unique Bella and It Tiz Well.

Unique Bella took command three furlongs from the finish on her way to giving Hollendorfer his second straight win in the Grade 2 race.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Unique Bella's career earnings to $162,400, with two wins in three starts.

''Today she showed that she's brilliant,'' Hollendorfer said. ''We thought she'd jump out of there a little better. I thought she would be close to the lead. Mike used his judgment, got behind and then got to the outside, so it worked out well.''

Unique Bella won her first career race by 10 1/4 lengths at Del Mar on Nov. 26, and she was just as good again.

''When we hit the far turn, it was like she was breathing different air,'' Smith said.
