Always Dreaming won the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

The winner was ridden by jockey John Velazquez, who also rode Animal Kingdom to a win at the 2011 Derby.

Always Dreaming entered the race as the 9–2 favorite in what was considered a more wide-open field than in recent years. Lookin at Lee finished second, followed by Battle of Midway and Classic Empire.

Last year’s champion was Nyquist.

Next up in the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes, on May 20 at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland.
