In the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby in 2016, Nyquist came across the finish line first, improving to a perfect 8–0 in his career.

Nyquist started off the morning as a 3–1 favorite, coming into to the race after an impressive victory at the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Nyquist won the went on to win the 1 1⁄4 mile race in 2:01.31, finishing ahead of Exaggerator and Gun Runner.

The third-year-old, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, finished third in the Preakness Stakes and was pulled out of the Belmont Stakes due to an illness.

Nyquist has since retired to begin a stud career.
