Rafael Nadal, the No. 3 player in the world, underwent a successful surgical operation on his appendix on Monday in Barcelona, his public relations team announced in a press release.

The 28-year-old Nadal was diagnosed with appendicitis four weeks ago during the Shanghai Masters tournament in China.

According to the release, Nadal had laparoscopic surgery without incident in the Teknon medical center in Barcelona. The operation was performed by Dr. Segura Movellán and overseen by Dr. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro of the Spanish Tennis Federation.

Depending on his post-op progress, Nadal is expected to be discharged from the hospital within 24 to 48 hours. He has no plans to speak to the press.

Nadal lost in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors two weeks ago. His withdrawal from the ATP World Tour Finals, set to begin Nov. 9, marked the end of his season.

It's unknown when the 14-time Grand Slam champion will start preseason training. The 2015 season begins in January.
