Cubs, Diamondbacks reveal throwbacks for Wrigley Field 100th anniversary

Next Wednesday will mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the stadium we now know as Wrigley Field, a celebration that will be highlighted by both the Chicago Cubs and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks wearing throwback uniforms dating back to the park’s first contest.
Back on April 23, 1914, the park, originally known as Weeghman Park, hosted its first game between the Chicago Federals and Kansas City Packers of the Federal League, a third league opposite the American League and National League which folded after the 1915 season. Chicago won by a 9-1 final score in front of a crowd of 21,000. The Cubs, then playing their games at West Side Grounds, wouldn’t move into the stadium until two years later.
The Diamondbacks will don the uniforms from that 1914 Packers franchise, though with a few adjustments to highlight their current organizational branding, according to Chris Creamer at SportsLogos.net. The grey uniforms will have the KC logo on the chest, but Arizona will also sport its alternate road black caps and a Diamondbacks logo on the sleeve. The Cubs will wear the Federals’ home whites with black pinstripes in what is scheduled to be the first of nine throwback games that they’ve planned for the upcoming season.
